The Bible Job Chapter 40

Job 40

Ἰώβ

And the Lord God answered Job, and said, (verse 31 in Brenton's English)

2 μὴ κρίσιν μετὰ ἱκανοῦ ἐκκλινεῖ, ἐλέγχων δὲ Θεὸν ἀποκριθήσεται αὐτήν;

Will [any one] pervert judgement with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer. (verse 32 in Brenton's English)

And Job answered and said to the Lord, (verse 33 in Brenton's English)

Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these [arguments]? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. (verse 34 in Brenton's English)

I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time. (verse 35 in Brenton's English)

And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, [saying], (verse 1 in Brenton's English)

Nay, gird up now your loins like a man; and I will ask you, and do you answer me. (verse 2 in Brenton's English)

8 μὴ ἀποποιοῦ μου τὸ κρίμα. οἴει δέ με ἄλλως σοι κεχρηματικέναι ἢ ἵνα ἀναφανῇς δίκαιος;

Do not set aside my judgement: and do you think that I have dealt with you in any other way, than that you might appear to be righteous? (verse 3 in Brenton's English)

9 ἦ βραχίων σοί ἐστι κατὰ τοῦ Κυρίου, ἢ φωνῇ κατ᾿ αὐτὸν βροντᾷς;

Have you an arm like the Lord's? or do you thunder with a voice like his? (verse 4 in Brenton's English)

Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe yourself with glory and honour. (verse 5 in Brenton's English)

And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one. (verse 6 in Brenton's English)

Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly. (verse 7 in Brenton's English)

And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame. (verse 8 in Brenton's English)

[Then] will I confess that your right hand can save [you]. (verse 9 in Brenton's English)

But now look at the wild beasts with you; they eat grass like oxen. (verse 10 in Brenton's English)

Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. (verse 11 in Brenton's English)

He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together. (verse 12 in Brenton's English)

His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is [as] cast iron. (verse 13 in Brenton's English)

This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels. (verse 14 in Brenton's English)

And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep. (verse 15 in Brenton's English)

He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush. (verse 16 in Brenton's English)

And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and [so do] the bushes of the field. (verse 17 in Brenton's English)

If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth. (verse 18 in Brenton's English)

[Yet one] shall take him in his sight; [one] shall catch [him] with a cord, and pierce his nose. (verse 19 in Brenton's English)

25 ἄξεις δὲ δράκοντα ἐν ἀγκίστρῳ, περιθήσεις δὲ φορβαίαν περὶ ρῖνα αὐτοῦ;

But will you catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose? (verse 20 in Brenton's English)

26 εἰ δήσεις κρίκον ἐν τῷ μυκτῆρι αὐτοῦ, ψελλίῳ δὲ τρυπήσεις τὸ χεῖλος αὐτοῦ;

Or will you fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp? (verse 21 in Brenton's English)

27 λαλήσει δέ σοι δεήσει, ἱκετηρίᾳ μαλακῶς;

Will he address you with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant? (verse 22 in Brenton's English)

28 θήσεται δὲ μετὰ σοῦ διαθήκην; λήψῃ δὲ αὐτὸν δοῦλον αἰώνιον;

And will he make a covenant with you? and will you take him for a perpetual servant? (verse 23 in Brenton's English)

29 παίξῃ δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ὥσπερ ὀρνέῳ ἢ δήσεις αὐτὸν ὥσπερ στρουθίον παιδίῳ;

And will you play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child? (verse 24 in Brenton's English)

30 ἐνσιτοῦνται δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔθνη, μεριτεύονται δὲ αὐτὸν Φοινίκων ἔθνη;

And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him? (verse 25 in Brenton's English)

And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither [shall they carry] his head in fishing vessels. (verse 26 in Brenton's English)

But you shall lay your hand upon him [once], remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more. (verse 27 in Brenton's English)
