Joshua 21

Ἰησοῦς Ναυῆ

1 ΚΑΙ προσήλθοσαν οἱ ἀρχιπατριῶται τῶν υἱῶν Λευὶ πρὸς Ἐλεάζαρ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ Ἰησοῦν τὸν τοῦ Ναυὴ καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιφύλους πατριῶν ἐκ τῶν φυλῶν Ἰσραὴλ

And the heads of the families of the sons of Levi drew near to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the [son] of Naue, and to the heads of families of the tribes of Israel.

2 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἐν Σηλὼ ἐν γῇ Χαναὰν λέγοντες· ἐνετείλατο Κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Μωυσῆ δοῦναι ἡμῖν πόλεις κατοικεῖν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια τοῖς κτήνεσιν ἡμῶν.

And they spoke to them in Selo in the land of Chanaan, saying, The Lord gave commandment by Moses to give us cities to dwell in, and the country round about for our cattle.

3 καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ τοῖς λευίταις ἐν τῷ κατακληρονομεῖν διὰ προστάγματος Κυρίου τὰς πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν.

So the children of Israel gave to the Levites in their inheritance by the command of the Lord the cities and the country round.

4 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ κλῆρος τῷ δήμῳ Καάθ, καὶ ἐγένετο τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἀαρὼν τοῖς ἱερεῦσι τοῖς Λευίταις ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ἰούδα καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Συμεὼν καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Βενιαμὶν κληρωτὶ πόλεις δεκατρεῖς·

And the lot came out for the children of Caath; and the sons of Aaron, the priests the Levites, had by lot thirteen cities out of the tribe of Juda, and out of the tribe of Symeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin.

5 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Καὰθ καταλελειμμένοις ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἐφραὶμ καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Δὰν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασσῆ κληρωτὶ πόλεις δέκα·

And to the sons of Caath that were left were [given by] lot ten cities, out of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasse.

6 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Γεδσὼν ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰσσάχαρ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Ἀσὴρ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλὶ καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασσῆ ἐν τῇ Βασὰν πόλεις δεκατρεῖς·

And the sons of Gedson had thirteen cities, out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Aser, and out of the tribe of Nephthali, and out of the half tribe of Manasse in Basan.

7 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Μεραρὶ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ρουβὴν καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Γὰδ καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ζαβουλὼν κληρωτὶ πόλεις δώδεκα.

And the sons of Merari according to their families had by lot twelve cities, out of the tribe of Ruben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zabulon.

8 καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ τοῖς Λευίταις τὰς πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν, ὃν τρόπον ἐνετείλατο Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ, κληρωτί.

And the children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities and their suburbs, as the Lord commanded Moses, by lot.

9 καὶ ἔδωκεν ἡ φυλὴ υἱῶν Ἰούδα καὶ ἡ φυλὴ υἱῶν Συμεὼν καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς υἱῶν Βενιαμὶν τὰς πόλεις ταύτας, καὶ ἐπεκλήθησαν

And the tribe of the children of Juda, and the tribe of the children of Symeon, and [part] of the tribe of the children of Benjamin gave these cities, and they were assigned

10 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἀαρὼν ἀπὸ τοῦ δήμου τοῦ Καὰθ τῶν υἱῶν Λευί, ὅτι τούτοις ἐγενήθη ὁ κλῆρος.

to the sons of Aaron of the family of Caath of the sons of Levi, for the lot fell to these.

11 καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὴν Καριαθαρβὸκ μητρόπολιν τῶν Ἐνὰκ (αὕτη ἐστὶ Χεβρὼν) ἐν τῷ ὄρει Ἰούδα· τὰ δὲ περισπόρια κύκλῳ αὐτῆς

And they gave to them Cariatharboc the metropolis of the sons of Enac; this is Chebron in the mountain [country] of Juda, and the suburbs round it.

12 καὶ τοὺς ἀγροὺς τῆς πόλεως καὶ τὰς κώμας αὐτῆς ἔδωκεν Ἰησοῦς τοῖς υἱοῖς Χάλεβ υἱοῦ Ἰεφοννὴ ἐν κατασχέσει·

But the lands of the city, and its villages Joshua gave to the sons of Chaleb the son of Jephonne for a possession.

13 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἀαρὼν ἔδωκε τὴν πόλιν φυγαδευτήριον τῷ φονεύσαντι, τὴν Χεβρὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ σὺν αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Λεμνὰ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ πρὸς αὐτῇ.

And to the sons of Aaron he gave the city of refuge for the slayer, Chebron, and the suburbs belonging to it; and Lemna and the suburbs belonging to it;

14 καὶ τὴν Αἰλὼμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Τεμὰ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

and Aelom and its suburbs; and Tema and its suburbs;

15 καὶ τὴν Γελλὰ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Δαβὶρ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

and Gella and its suburbs; and Dabir and its suburbs;

16 καὶ Ἀσὰ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Τανὺ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Βαιθσαμὺς καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις ἐννέα παρὰ τῶν δύο φυλῶν τούτων.

and Asa and its suburbs; and Tany and its suburbs; and Baethsamys and its suburbs: nine cities from these two tribes.

17 καὶ παρὰ τῆς φυλῆς Βενιαμὶν τὴν Γαβαὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γαθὲθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

And from the tribe of Benjamin, Gabaon and its suburbs; and Gatheth and its suburbs;

18 καὶ Ἀναθὼθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γάμαλα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις τέσσαρες.

and Anathoth and its suburbs; and Gamala and its suburbs; four cities.

19 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις υἱῶν Ἀαρὼν τῶν ἱερέων δεκατρεῖς.

All the cities of the sons of Aaron the priests, thirteen.

20 καὶ τοῖς δήμοις υἱοῖς Καὰθ τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς καταλελειμμένοις ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Καὰθ καὶ ἐγενήθη ἡ πόλις τῶν ἱερέων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ἐφραίμ,

And to the families, [even] the sons of Caath the Levites, that were left of the sons of Caath, there was [given] their priests' city,

21 καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτοῖς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ φυγαδευτηρίου τὴν τοῦ φονεύσαντος, τὴν Συχὲμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γάζαρα καὶ τὰ πρὸς αὐτὴν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

out of the tribe of Ephraim; and they gave them the slayer's city of refuge, Sychem, and its suburbs, and Gazara and its appendages, and its suburbs;

22 καὶ Βαιθωρὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ αὐτῇ, πόλεις τέσσαρες.

and Baethoron and its suburbs: four cities:

23 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Δὰν τὴν Ἐλκωθαὶμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Γεθεδὰν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

and the tribe of Dan, Helcothaim and its suburbs; and Gethedan and its suburbs:

24 καὶ Αἰλὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Γεθερεμμὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις τέσσαρες.

and Aelon and its suburbs; and Getheremmon and its suburbs: four cities.

25 καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασσῆ τὴν Τανὰχ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Ἰεβαθὰ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις δύο.

And out of the half tribe of Manasse, Tanach and its suburbs; and Jebatha and its suburbs; two cities.

26 πᾶσαι πόλεις δέκα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ τὰ πρὸς αὐταῖς τοῖς δήμοις υἱῶν Καὰθ τοῖς ὑπολελειμμένοις.

In all [were given] ten cities, and the suburbs of each belonging to them, to the families of the sons of Caath that remained.

27 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Γεδσὼν τοῖς Λευίταις ἐκ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασσῆ τὰς πόλεις τὰς ἀφωρισμένας τοῖς φονεύσασι, τὴν Γαυλὼν ἐν τῇ Βασανίτιδι καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Βοσορὰν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις δύο.

And [Joshua gave] to the sons of Gedson the Levites out of the other half tribe of Manasse cities set apart for the slayers, Gaulon in the country of Basan, and its suburbs; and Bosora and its suburbs; two cities.

28 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰσσάχαρ τὴν Κισὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Δεββὰ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kison and its suburbs; and Debba and its suburbs;

29 καὶ τὴν Ρεμμὰθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Πηγὴν γραμμάτων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις τέσσαρες.

and Remmath and its suburbs; and the well of Letters, and its suburbs; four cities.

30 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἀσὴρ τὴν Βασελλὰν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Δαββὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ

And out of the tribe of Aser, Basella and its suburbs; and Dabbon and its suburbs;

31 καὶ Χελκὰτ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Ραὰβ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις τέσσαρες.

and Chelcat and its suburbs; and Raab and its suburbs; four cities.

32 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλὶ τὴν πόλιν τὴν ἀφωρισμένην τῷ φονεύσαντι, τὴν Κάδης ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Ἐμμὰθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Θεμμὼν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ, πόλεις τρεῖς.

And of the tribe of Nephthali, the city set apart for the slayer, Cades in Galilee, and its suburbs; and Nemmath, and its suburbs; and Themmon and its suburbs; three cities.

33 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τοῦ Γεδσὼν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν πόλεις δεκατρεῖς.

All the cities of Gedson according to their families [were] thirteen cities.

34 καὶ τῷ δήμῳ υἱῶν Μεραρὶ τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς λοιποῖς ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ζαβουλὼν τὴν Μαὰν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Κάδης καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς

And to the family of the sons of Merari the Levites that remained, [he gave] out of the tribe of Zabulon, Maan and its suburbs; and Cades and its suburbs,

35 καὶ Σελλὰ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς, πόλεις τρεῖς.

and Sella and its suburbs: three cities.

36 καὶ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου τοῦ κατὰ Ἱεριχὼ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ρουβήν, τὴν πόλιν τὸ φυγαδευτήριον τοῦ φονεύσαντος, τὴν Βοσὸρ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῇ Μισὼρ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Ἰαζὴρ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς

And beyond Jordan over against Jericho, out of the tribe of Ruben, the city of refuge for the slayer, Bosor in the wilderness; Miso and its suburbs; and Jazer and its suburbs; and Decmon and its suburbs; and Mapha and its suburbs; four cities.

37 καὶ τὴν Δεκμὼν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Μαφὰ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς, πόλεις τέσσαρες.

In the English, this verse is part of verse 36.

38 καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Γὰδ τὴν πόλιν τὸ φυγαδευτήριον τοῦ φονεύσαντος, τὴν Ραμὼθ ἐν τῇ Γαλαὰδ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Καμὶν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς

And out of the tribe of Gad the city of refuge for the slayer, both Ramoth in Galaad, and its suburbs; Camin and its suburbs; and Esbon and its suburbs; and Jazer and its suburbs: the cities [were] four in all. (verse 37 in Brenton's English)

39 καὶ τὴν Ἐσεβὼν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Ἰαζὴρ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς, πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τέσσαρες.

40 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τοῖς υἱοῖς Μεραρὶ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῶν καταλελειμμένων ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς τῆς Λευί· καὶ ἐγενήθη τὰ ὅρια πόλεις δεκαδύο.

All [these] cities [were given] to the sons of Merari according to the families of them that were left out of the tribe of Levi; and their limits were the twelve cities. (verse 38 in Brenton's English)

41 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τῶν Λευιτῶν ἐν μέσῳ κατασχέσεως υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ τεσσαράκοντα ὀκτὼ πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν κύκλῳ τῶν πόλεων τούτων,

All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel, [were] forty-eight cities, (verse 39 in Brenton's English)

and their suburbs round about these cities: a city and the suburbs round about the city to all these cities: and Joshua ceased dividing the land by their borders: and the children of Israel gave a portion to Joshua because of the commandment of the Lord: they gave him the city which he asked: they gave him Thamnasachar in mount Ephraim; and Joshua built the city, and lived in it: and Joshua took the knives of stone, wherewith he circumcised the children of Israel that were born in the desert by the way, and put them in Thamnasachar. 42 πόλις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια κύκλῳ τῆς πόλεως πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσι ταύταις. 42α Καὶ συνετέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς διαμερίσας τὴν γῆν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῶν. 42β καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ μερίδα τῷ Ἰησοῖ κατὰ πρόσταγμα Κυρίου· ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ τὴν πόλιν, ἣν ᾐτήσατο· τὴν Θαμνασαρὰχ ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ ὄρει Ἐφραίμ. 42γ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Ἰησοῦς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ᾤκησεν ἐν αὐτῇ. 42δ καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰησοῦς τὰς μαχαίρας τὰς πετρίνας, ἐν αἷς περιέτεμε τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ τοὺς γενομένους ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὰς ἐν Θαμνασαράχ.

and their suburbs round about these cities: a city and the suburbs round about the city to all these cities: (Brenton's own wording of 1851; the updated edition leaves this verse out)

43 Καὶ ἔδωκε Κύριος τῷ Ἰσραὴλ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, ἣν ὤμοσε δοῦναι τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν, καὶ κατεκληρονόμησαν αὐτὴν καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐν αὐτῇ.

So the Lord gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers: and they inherited it, and lived in it. (verse 41 in Brenton's English)

44 καὶ κατέπαυσεν αὐτοὺς Κύριος κυκλόθεν, καθὰ ὤμοσε τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν· οὐκ ἀντέστη οὐθεὶς κατενώπιον αὐτῶν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν· πάντας τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτῶν παρέδωκε Κύριος εἰς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν.

And the Lord gave them rest round about, as he swore to their fathers: not one of all their enemies maintained his ground against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hands. (verse 42 in Brenton's English)

45 οὐ διέπεσεν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ρημάτων τῶν καλῶν, ὧν ἐλάλησε Κύριος τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ· πάντα παρεγένετο.

There failed not one of the good things which the Lord spoke to the children of Israel; all came to pass. (verse 43 in Brenton's English)
