Psalm 113

Psalm 114-115 in the Hebrew numbering, which most Western Bibles follow.

(114) Alleluia. At the going forth of Israel from Egypt, of the house of Jacob from a barbarous people,

Judea became his sanctuary, [and] Israel his dominion.

The sea saw and fled: Jordan was turned back.

The mountains skipped like rams, and the hills like lambs.

5 τί σοί ἐστι, θάλασσα, ὅτι ἔφυγες, καὶ σύ, Ἰορδάνη, ὅτι ἐστράφης εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω;

What [ailed] you, O sea, that you fled? and you Jordan, that you were turned back?

6 τὰ ὄρη, ὅτι ἐσκιρτήσατε ὡσεὶ κριοί, καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ ὡς ἀρνία προβάτων;

[You⌃] mountains, that you⌃ skipped like rams, and [you⌃] hills, like lambs?

The earth trembled at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;

who turned the rock into pools of water, and the flint into fountains of water.

(115) Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, because of your mercy and your truth; (verse 1 in Brenton's English)

10 μήποτε εἴπωσι τὰ ἔθνη· ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῶν;

lest at any time the nations should say, Where is their God? (verse 2 in Brenton's English)

But our God has done in heaven and on earth, whatever he has pleased. (verse 3 in Brenton's English)

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the works of men's hands. (verse 4 in Brenton's English)

They have a mouth, but they can’t speak; they have eyes, but they can’t see: (verse 5 in Brenton's English)

they have ears, but they can’t hear; they have noses, but they can’t smell; (verse 6 in Brenton's English)

they have hands, but they can’t handle; they have feet, but they can’t walk: they can’t speak through their throat. (verse 7 in Brenton's English)

Let those that make them become like to them, and all who trust in them. (verse 8 in Brenton's English)

The house of Israel trusts in the Lord: he is their helper and defender. (verse 9 in Brenton's English)

The Lord has remembered us, and blessed us: he has blessed the house of Israel, he has blessed the house of Aaron. (verse 12 in Brenton's English)

The heaven of heavens [belongs] to the Lord: but he has given the earth to the sons of men. (verse 16 in Brenton's English)

The dead shall not praise you, O Lord, nor any that go down to Hades. (verse 17 in Brenton's English)
