St. Amphilochius of Iconium (c. 340-394)

Born at Caesarea in Cappadocia, the son of another Amphilochius, brother of Nonna, which made him cousin to Gregory the Theologian. He studied rhetoric under Libanius at Antioch and practised law in Constantinople, then left it for three years of prayer at Ozizala in Cappadocia, writing to Gregory and to Basil. In 374, at Basil’s urging, he became bishop of Iconium, and it was at his asking that Basil wrote On the Holy Spirit, which is addressed to him. He held a synod at Iconium on the divinity of the Spirit, sat at the Second Ecumenical Council in 381, and his verses to Seleucus, which list the books of Scripture, stand among the canons of the Church.
