St. Clement of Ohrid

A disciple of Sts Cyril and Methodius who was driven out of Moravia with the others after Methodius died and came to Bulgaria, where Tsar Boris sent him to Ohrid to teach. In seven years he trained thousands of Slavic clergy, and he is credited with making the Cyrillic alphabet or bringing it into use, so that the Church of the Slavs could read in letters simpler than his teachers’ Glagolitic. He wrote sermons for the feasts in plain Slavonic for priests to read aloud, and in 893 became the first bishop of Slavic birth. He died in 916 and is one of the Seven Holy Enlighteners of the Bulgarian Church. Feast: July 27.
