The Russian tradition developed polyphonic choral music (from the 17th century onward): a departure from Byzantine monophony. Great composers: Bortniansky, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff (All-Night Vigil, 1915), Chesnokov. The rich choral tradition of the Russian Church is world-renowned.
