Last of the great Church Fathers, monk at Mar Saba monastery. His 'Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith' is the first systematic theology in Christianity. Defended icons with three treatises during the Iconoclast crisis. Also a hymnographer: composed many canons and hymns still used in worship. Feast: December 4.
