St. Herman of Alaska (c. 1756-1836)

Russian monk from Valaam Monastery, one of the first Orthodox missionaries to North America. Arrived in Alaska in 1794 with the Kodiak Mission. Defended the Aleut people against exploitation. Lived as a hermit on Spruce Island, performing miracles of healing. First Orthodox saint canonized in the Americas (1970). Feast: August 9.
