The Apostolic Canons · compiled in Syria in the later fourth century · The Apostolic Canons on the map
A bishop, or presbyter, or deacon who strikes believers who sin, or unbelievers who have done wrong, and wishes by such means to make them afraid, we command to be deposed; for nowhere did the Lord teach us this; but on the contrary, He, when struck, did not strike back; when reviled, did not revile in return; when suffering, did not threaten.
