The Holy Canons Nicaea II Canon 14

Canon 14 No reading from the ambo without laying-on of hands

The Seventh Ecumenical Council · Nicaea, 787 · convened by the empress Irene and the emperor Constantine VI · Seventh Ecumenical Council: Nicaea II (787) on the map

That order is established in the priesthood is manifest to all; and to preserve with exactness the ministrations of the priesthood is well-pleasing to God. Since, then, we see some receiving the tonsure of the clergy from infancy without laying-on of hands, and not yet having received laying-on of hands from bishops, and reading from the ambo in the assembly, but doing this uncanonically, we direct that from now on this not be done; and the same is to be kept also in the case of monks. But each abbot has leave to perform the laying-on of hands of a reader in his own monastery, and in it alone, if a laying-on of hands was given to the abbot himself by a bishop for the presidency of an abbot, he being, that is, a presbyter. Likewise also, according to the ancient custom, the chorepiscopi must appoint readers by permission of the bishop.
