St. Gerasimos of the Jordan

A Lycian monk who founded a lavra near the Jordan in the fifth century, where hermits lived alone on bread, water and dates through the week and came in to the community on Sunday. As a young monk he was drawn for a time into the teaching of Eutyches, and St Euthymius brought him back. The Spiritual Meadow tells the story he is painted with: a lion that came to him lame, whose paw he healed, and which stayed and served the monastery, and when he died lay down on his grave and would not eat, and died there. He died in 475. Feast: March 4.
