St. Isaac of Nineveh (7th century), a Syriac-speaking bishop who became a hermit. His Ascetical Homilies are among the most profound mystical texts in Christian literature: on humility, solitude, tears, prayer, the love of God for all creation, and the mystery of divine compassion. Widely read in Orthodox monasteries. His vision of God's love as an all-consuming fire has challenged readers for centuries.
