St. Marcellus of the Unsleeping Ones (d. 485)

Marcellus came from Apamea in Syria, studied at Antioch and Ephesus, and joined the brotherhood that Alexander the Unsleeping had gathered near Constantinople, whose monks kept the praise of God going day and night, one choir relieving another. After Alexander and his successor he was made abbot against his will, and under him the Akoimetoi, "the unsleeping", in choirs of Greek, Latin and Syriac speakers, became the most renowned house of the city; he built a great church, a hospital and a hostel for the homeless. He stood with the Council of Chalcedon against the teaching of Eutyches, at the council and after it, and died in peace in 485. Feast: December 29.
