First Patriarch of Moscow after the restoration of the Patriarchate (1917). Led the Russian Church through the Bolshevik Revolution and the beginning of Soviet persecution. Courageously protested the confiscation of church property and the murder of clergy. Died under house arrest, likely poisoned. Canonized in 1989. Feast: April 7.
