Κανόνες τῆς ἐν Νικαίᾳ Ἁγίας καὶ Οἰκουμενικῆς Α´ Συνόδου

It is fitting that a bishop be appointed preferably by all those in the province; but if this should be difficult, whether because of pressing necessity or because of the length of the road, three at all events being gathered together in the same place, the absent also giving their votes with them and consenting through letters, then the ordination is to be performed; and the confirmation of what is done is to be given in each province to the metropolitan.
Ἐπίσκοπον προσήκει μάλιστα μὲν ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐν τῇ ἐπαρχίᾳ καθίστασθαι· εἰ δὲ δυσχερὲς εἴη τὸ τοιοῦτο, ἢ διὰ κατεπείγουσαν ἀνάγκην, ἢ διὰ μῆκος ὁδοῦ, ἐξ ἅπαντος τρεῖς ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ συναγομένους, συμψήφων γινομένων καὶ τῶν ἀπόντων, καὶ συντιθεμένων διὰ γραμμάτων, τότε τὴν χειροτονίαν ποιεῖσθαι· τὸ δὲ κῦρος τῶν γενομένων δίδοσθαι καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ἐπαρχίαν τῷ μητροπολίτῃ.
