St. Epiphanius of Cyprus

A Palestinian monk who knew Hebrew, Syriac, Greek, Coptic and some Latin, and was made bishop of Salamis in Cyprus in 367 and held it thirty-six years. His Panarion, the Medicine Chest, describes eighty heresies and gives the remedy for each, and is for many of them the only record that survives. He fought Origenism with a zeal that took him to Constantinople in extreme old age to oppose St John Chrysostom, whom he had been misled about, and he left the city and died at sea on the way home in 403. Iconoclasts later circulated writings against images under his name, which the Seventh Council did not accept as his. His Ancoratus contains a creed close to the one the Church confesses.
