St. Marina the Great Martyr

By the account the Church reads, a girl of fifteen at Antioch in Pisidia, the daughter of a pagan priest, brought up by a Christian nurse, who refused the governor both his gods and his proposal of marriage. In prison, the story goes, the devil came to her and she seized him and beat him with a hammer, which is how she is painted; she was beheaded around 304. The West knows her as Margaret. Her right hand is kept at the Vatopedi monastery on the Holy Mountain, and she is loved especially by the islands, where her day is one of the feasts of the summer. Feast: July 17.
