St. Silouan the Athonite (1866-1938)

Russian monk on Mount Athos. After a period of spiritual torment, Christ appeared to him and he received the command 'Keep thy mind in hell and despair not.' His writings on humility, love for enemies, and prayer for the whole world are among the most powerful spiritual texts of the modern era. Canonized in 1987. Feast: September 24.
