The Holy Canons Nicaea I Canon 6

Canon 6 Ancient prerogatives of Alexandria, Rome and Antioch kept

The First Ecumenical Council · Nicaea, 325 · convened by the emperor Constantine · First Ecumenical Council: Nicaea I (325) on the map

Let the ancient customs prevail, those in Egypt and Libya and Pentapolis, so that the bishop in Alexandria has authority over all these; since this is customary for the bishop in Rome also. Likewise also in Antioch and in the other provinces, let the prerogatives be preserved to the churches. And this is evident in general: that if anyone becomes a bishop without the consent of the metropolitan, the great synod has defined that such a one ought not to be a bishop. If, however, to the common vote of all, it being reasonable and according to the ecclesiastical canon, two or three object through contentiousness of their own, let the vote of the majority prevail.
