Written by St. John Climacus (c. 579-649), abbot of St. Catherine's Monastery, Sinai. Describes 30 steps of spiritual progress from renunciation of the world to perfect love of God and neighbor. Read in Orthodox monasteries every Lent. The 4th Sunday of Lent is dedicated to St. John Climacus.
