St. Theodosius the Cenobiarch

A Cappadocian who founded near Bethlehem the great common-life monastery of the Judaean desert, with guest houses, an infirmary, a home for the old and a house for the mentally ill, and churches so that Greeks, Armenians and the Bessi from Thrace could each serve in their own language, with all coming together for communion. He and St Sabbas were made heads of all the monks of Palestine, he of those in community, which is his title. When the emperor Anastasius tried to impose a creed against Chalcedon, the two of them read an anathema of it from the pulpit in Jerusalem. He died in 529 at a hundred and five. Feast: January 11.
