Philosopher and apologist. Born in Samaria, converted after studying philosophy. His First and Second Apologies defend Christianity to Roman emperors; his Dialogue with Trypho engages with Judaism. Described the earliest detailed account of the Sunday Eucharistic liturgy (c. 155). Martyred in Rome. Feast: June 1.
