Autocephalous since 1833/1850. About 98% of the Greek population identifies as Orthodox. Strong cultural identification between Greek identity and Orthodox faith. Governed by a Holy Synod under the Archbishop of Athens. The New Lands (northern Greece) have a dual jurisdiction with the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
