4th-century deacon, hymnographer, and theologian of Nisibis and Edessa. Renowned for biblical poetry and theological hymns that defend Orthodox faith and catechize the people. The Prayer of St. Ephraim is central to Great Lent and expresses repentance, humility, and vigilance. Feast: January 28.
