Bishop of Antioch, Apostolic Father. Wrote seven letters en route to his martyrdom in Rome. First to use the term 'Catholic Church.' Defended the threefold ministry of bishop, priest, and deacon, and the reality of Christ's flesh against Docetism. 'Where the bishop is, there is the Catholic Church.' Feast: December 20.
