St. Nicholas of Myra (c. 270-343)

Bishop of Myra in Lycia (modern Turkey), one of the most universally venerated saints in Christianity. Attended the First Ecumenical Council (325) and, according to tradition, struck Arius for his blasphemy. Known for extraordinary generosity: the historical basis for 'Santa Claus.' Patron of sailors, children, and the wrongly accused. His relics were translated to Bari, Italy in 1087. Feast: December 6.
