St. Basil the Great (330-379)
Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, one of the Three Holy Hierarchs. Theologian, monastic legislator, and social reformer. Wrote the Longer and Shorter Rules for monastic life (still used today). Built the 'Basiliad': a complex of hospitals, hospices, and workshops for the poor. His liturgy is served 10 times per year. Feast: January 1.
