Kenosis (The Self-Emptying)

He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant. The Orthodox reading of that verse is careful about what the emptying is: the Son does not lay aside His divinity or suspend any of it, because a divinity that can be put down is not one. The emptying is the assuming. What He takes on is the whole of our condition, including hunger, weariness, ignorance as man, fear in the garden and death, and He takes it without ceasing for an instant to fill all things as God. The modern kenotic theories that have the Word divest Himself of omniscience or omnipotence to become man are therefore not a deeper humility but the old error of making the Incarnation a subtraction.
