При смъртта душата преминава през частен съд. Част от православното предание описва „въздушни митарства“ (телония): места, където демоните обвиняват, а ангелите защитават душата. Това не е официален догмат, а широко разпространено учение в светоотеческата и агиографската книжнина. Окончателната участ се определя на Страшния съд.
