По смерти душа проходит частный суд. Часть православного предания описывает «воздушные мытарства» (греч. телония), где бесы обвиняют душу, а ангелы её защищают. Это не официальный догмат, а учение, широко распространённое в святоотеческой и агиографической литературе. Окончательное состояние определяется на Страшном суде.
