Με τον θάνατο η ψυχή υφίσταται μια μερική κρίση. Ένα σκέλος της ορθόδοξης παράδοσης περιγράφει «εναέρια τελώνια», όπου οι δαίμονες κατηγορούν την ψυχή και οι άγγελοι την υπερασπίζονται. Δεν πρόκειται για επίσημο δόγμα, αλλά για διδασκαλία διαδεδομένη στην πατερική και αγιολογική γραμματεία. Η τελική κατάσταση καθορίζεται στη Μέλλουσα Κρίση.
