Са смрћу душа пролази кроз посебни суд. Један део православног предања описује „ваздушна митарства“ (телонија), у којима демони оптужују душу, а анђели је бране. То није званични догмат, него раширено учење светоотачке и агиографске књижевности. Коначно стање одређује се на Страшном суду.
