La moarte, sufletul trece printr-o judecată particulară. O parte a tradiției ortodoxe descrie „vămile văzduhului” (telonia), unde demonii acuză sufletul, iar îngerii îl apără. Aceasta nu este o dogmă oficială, ci o învățătură larg răspândită în literatura patristică și hagiografică. Starea finală se hotărăște la Judecata de Apoi.
